What's the process?
Counselling sessions can be performed online or in person, depending on your preference.
Assessment
Your initial assessment is a 60-90 minute session designed to gain a deep understanding of your challenges and goals. This time allows us to explore what's bringing you to therapy and how we can best support you moving forward.
Treatment
After the initial assessment, we'll discuss a treatment plan tailored to your needs, recommending therapeutic approaches that may be most beneficial. We'll also give you an idea of how many sessions you may require, knowing that healing is often a layered process. Treatment sessions are 50-60 minutes and can be booked as needed, depending on your goals. Together, we'll regularly review your progress to ensure you feel supported and that we're moving in the right direction.
How many sessions will I need?
This depends on your individual needs, challenges, and goals. Some people find short-term therapy helpful, typically between 3-8 sessions, while others may benefit from longer-term support. For more complex concerns or deep grief, ongoing therapy can provide the space needed for long-term healing and support. We'll work together to ensure you receive the right level of support for as long as you need.
Will my information be confidential?
Confidentiality is key to creating an environment where you can be honest and feel safe, so your privacy is vitally important. Everything discussed in therapy is kept strictly confidential in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles. This means your personal information will not be shared with anyone without your written consent. The only exceptions to confidentiality occur if there is a serious risk of harm to yourself or others, or if disclosure is required by law. If you have any questions about privacy and confidentiality, we're happy to discuss this further. See also our Privacy Policy.
What's involved in therapy?
Therapy is a journey that takes time, commitment, and a willingness to engage in the process. After your initial assessment, we'll discuss the approaches that best suit your needs and what feels most comfortable for you. Building a positive relationship with your therapist-where you feel heard, accepted, and respected —is essential. This foundation allows you to be open, develop trust, and find the courage to face challenges and make meaningful changes. However, real and lasting progress comes from more than just attending sessions. Actively applying the skills and strategies learned in therapy to your daily life is key. To support this, you may be given tasks or challenges to practise between sessions, helping to reinfarce what we explore together. Therapy is not about quick fixes, but about creating lasting change in a way that works for you.
Can you prescribe medication?
No. Counsellors are not medical doctors and do not prescribe medication.
How much does it cost?
Counselling sessions at Abled are $150 per hour. Your first session (the Assessment session as described above) may be slightly longer (up to 90 minutes), but this initial session is also charged at $150. Most people prefer to pay before the session, as paying at the end can sometimes feel a little formal — however, the choice is entirely yours.
I believe counselling should be accessible to everyone. If you are experiencing financial hardship and have a Mental Health Care Plan, I offer discounted sessions at my own cost, as I am not subsidised by the government. My aim is to ensure that support is available to those who need it, without adding extra stress.
What if I cancel?
If you need to cancel, we kindly ask for at least 24 hours' notice. Cancellations made within 24 hours of your appointment will incur a 50% fee except in the case of emergencies.
Does Insurance cover the cost?
You will need to check with your private health insurance provider to see if rebates are available for counselling services. If you have añy questions about this feel free to reach out.
